The Elbaite forms a parallel-sided trigonal crystal, 5.8 cm long and terminating with a completely flat pinacoid with a micro-stippled texture and matt lustre. The Elbaite appears black or intensely dark green, yet the opposite end to the described termination is a ragged cross-section of tea green-tan.
