Its intensity in colour occurs in the very final stages of its crystal growth, in the outer layer, beneath which the Calcite is a rather duller cream colour. Its shimmering, almost pearlescent lustre, is not actually so, but is an affect produced by many small stepped glassy crystal faces covering the display surface. A few of the crystals have their tips missing, showing how their colour is zoned internally.
