Cerussite, or lead carbonate, is one of the most famous species found at Broken Hill where it occurred within the extensive near-surface oxidation zone. This substantial aggregate of 'jackstraw'-habit acicular crystals is a really superb demonstration of the richness of this deposit. Some residual primary Galena remains on the back, but this piece is very much dominated by delicate intergrown Cerussite crystals, reaching up to 1.6 cm in length. As one would expect for such a large, dense, aggregate of thin crystals, there is some bruising around the edges, but also many extremely well-formed crystals within the many cavities seen around the piece. Ex Martin Kershaw Collection (no. 282), with his typed card label, this is clearly an older specimen, probably dating to the 1970s or perhaps earlier.
