{"product_id":"calcite-219","title":"CALCITE","description":"Anyone familiar with minerals in the Philip Rashleigh Gallery of the Royal Museum Cornwall, Truro, will know the magnificent specimens of Wheal Wrey Calcite. We cannot meet the size of these, but this cabinet specimen is a fine example of single acicular crystals covering the very thinnest, grey slaty matrix. The Calcite crystals grade from just a few millimetres tall at one end through to perfectly terminated crystals exceeding 3 cm at the opposite end. Crystals vary from transparent to translucent, with the top halves of the larger crystals displaying a fine sugary texture and white frosting. These features are also differentiated in both long and shortwave ultraviolet. In LWUV all Calcite fluoresces bright, pinkish cream while the upper halves of the tall crystals are vivid apricot orange. These same colours are also visible under SWUV, but much less intense.
