This habit of Barytocalcite is unique to Nentsberry Haggs mine near Nenthead in Alston Moor, Cumbria and most specimens like this came from the Admiralty Concession flats which required a considerable effort to get too. There is some damage to the tips of a few of the crystals, where their darker fudge-coloured interior shows through, but this does not detract from the overall size and impression that this fine English rarity gives. Charlesite was generally assumed to be the paler yellow form of Ettringite group minerals in the mines, but in reality visual identification alone is not an adequate method of distinguishing them. Other visual features used to distinguish Charlesite crystals include extensive gemmy areas, lustrous faces, and excellent terminations all of which are seen in this specimen. This fine miniature specimen displays a parallel to sub-parallel group of prismatic crystals individually measuring to 2.5 cm in length. In some specimens chemical zonation from Sturmannite to Charlesite is claimed. This attractive pale sulphur yellow specimen of what was once believed to be 'Charlesite' from the mine might more correctly be termed Ettringite group but its historic labelling is kept to highlight its difference to more typical Ettringite or Sturmannite.","brand":"Crystal Classics","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46538405281967,"sku":"CC1662","price":1500.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0710\/8516\/2671\/files\/CC1662.png?v=1770133624"},{"product_id":"atacamite","title":"ATACAMITE","description":"Wallaroo mine and the adjoining Moonta mine, that later merged, produced some of the world's most spectacular Atacamite crystals during the early 1900s, before they closed in 1927. Long, deep green bladed crystals as individuals and fan-shaped aggregates adorn historic museum collections around the world, but very few good specimens are in private hands. This extremely rich miniature specimen from Wallaroo mine in South Australia features rich deep green intergrown prismatic crystals of Atacamite exceptionally reaching 3.7 cm in length, on a whitish matrix. The main crystal has a perfect sloping pyramidal termination, but lower down the long prism several of the faces are deformed, not through careless handling, but from where other crystals were intergrown and now detached. Under illumination, the upper part of this main crystal displays internal flashes of green where the light penetrates. Despite its natural imperfections, this is a staggeringly large crystal for the species, and attached to the back is a rich aggregate of intergrown bladed\/prismatic Atacamite crystals. A miniature-sized cleavage fragment from a larger Leadhillite crystal is noteworthy enough, but within it are patches of dark brown Melanotekite (an exceptionally rare lead iron silicate) and pale yellow Mimetite. Many microscopic circular orange-brown inclusions are seen within the Leadhillite, and might also be Melanotekite but the main Melanotekite crystals are darker brown, more coarsely crystallized (still mm scale) and sometimes aggregates in lines or veinlets possibly along cleavage surfaces. There are also several pale lemon yellow Mimetite crystals scattered over and embedded in the Leadhillite. The Leadhillite, a lead sulphate carbonate hydroxide, measures 3.8 x 1.8 x 1.0 cm and is translucent silver-grey with a brilliant reflective lustre on its cleavage surfaces. The Melanotekite has been confirmed by EDS (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) at the Royal Ontario Museum, whose Study Card accompanies this specimen. An excellent specimen of these two very rare species from Tsumeb. Please note: this specimen has been repaired. Sometime in its history the Leadhillite has been fractured across its width and was glued back together. In our prep-lab we have removed the excess glue, which was visible, rendering the repair now invisible, although the fracture plane is, of course, evident. The specimen of Suolunite we have here is from the Mine Lac D'Amiante (Lake Asbestos mine) Quebec, Canada, a major Asbestos producing openpit. It is probably from the famous small discovery in 1997 when only about 40 specimens were recovered from a single pocket, most of which went to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Most of the specimens were a lavender to grey colour - the lilac-blue colour seen here, being the rarest and most desirable, particularly for gem cutting! Most specimens display an almost unique blue-green colour, of the most intense vibrancy. Occasionally, Liroconite crystals grade into a greenish colour, some of which have proven to be a new species, Kernowite - an iron-rich analogue of Liroconite. However, colour is not a reliable indicator for identification. Very few of the greener 'Liroconite' crystals in existence have proven to be Kernowite, which remains extremely rare, and the only method of knowing for sure is chemical analysis. This specimen is certainly an extreme form of green Liroconite, of the most intense deep emerald green - much greener in person than photography captures. If you think of the colour of Dioptase you won't be far off. Crowned by a well-developed group of sharp, bladed Liroconite crystals to 3.5 mm in length this specimen is from the famous Wheal Gorland, St.Day, Cornwall.
