It is a quite distinctive specimen and comes from one of Weardale's last working Fluorspar (the industrial product of Fluorite rather than mineral specimens) producers at the Groverake mine in Rookhope valley. Connected with Frazer's Hush mine, Groverake mine operated through until the 1990s but unlike Frazer's Hush, mineral specimens from Groverake are few and far between. This lovely larger display specimen features intergrown crystals of Fluorite measuring to 4.5 cm on edge. The crystals of Fluorite are lustrous with a zoned purple colour but it is the rich, and distinctive scattering of colourless gemmy to translucent white crystals of Quartz across the surface of the Fluorite crystals which provides the aesthetic edge. Gemmy to translucent, lustrous peppermint sea green Fluorite crystals measuring to 2 cm are partly overgrown by a delicate sugary frosting of Quartz micro-crystals. It's a delightful specimen and a lovey example of Fluorite very seldom seen from Redburn mine, despite it being a Fluorspar mine! We use the term Fluorspar to indicate the commercial product of Fluorite. Redburn mine closed in 1981 and it tends to be the jackstraw Cerussite we now see in collections rather than Fluorite. Although Baryte is recorded in several old publications from the mine, Baryte has never been abundant, therefore few specimens come on to the market. This specimen displays a single (or perhaps two) slightly gemmy cube of amber Fluorite, reaching over 4 cm on edge partially, but richly, overgrown by intergrown thickly tabular Baryte crystals measuring exceptionally to 3.5 cm in length, with a lustrous white to tinted yellow colour. Most of these Baryte crystals are themselves partly overgrown by small metallic light yellow Pyrite crystals, and colourless Quartz crystals.
