I have looked at many Cuprites over the years, but this leapt out making me shake my head in disbelief at its size and beauty! Two exceptionally large dark maroon octahedral Cuprite crystals to 3.3 cm on edge, display perfectly on a white-ish-green fine-grained matrix. This specimen is from the famous Mashamba West mine at Kolwezi, Katanga, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although outdated, this location commonly appears on older labels as Shaba, Zaire. This specimen also displays smaller Cuprite crystals to 2 cm. The crystal faces have a bright, sub-metallic lustre with naturally etched areas, typically more in the centre of each octahedral face. Charlesite was generally assumed to be the paler yellow form of Ettringite group minerals in the mines, but in reality visual identification alone is not an adequate method of distinguishing them. Other visual features used to distinguish Charlesite crystals include extensive gemmy areas, lustrous faces, and excellent terminations all of which are seen in this specimen. This fine miniature specimen displays a parallel to sub-parallel group of prismatic crystals individually measuring to 2.5 cm in length. In some specimens chemical zonation from Sturmannite to Charlesite is claimed. It is easy to become numb to Moroccan Vanadinite due to the sheer volume of specimens that have been mined and sold over the past two decades, but specimens at the higher end of quality will undoubtedly become irreplaceable classics in time. Indeed, prior to the discoveries in Morocco, Arizona very much lead the world in terms of fine red crystallized Vanadinite, but look at the Arizona specimens now and they don't compare in the slightest. This particular form of Vanadinite from Morocco, as 'floater' composite crystals, I liken to dragon scales, where the hexagonal crystals overlap in wonderful patterns. It is from the 2015\/2016 find at Nadonjukin, a small village in the northeast of Tanzania. Originally marketed as Chrome Dravite, it was not until relatively recently that the chromophore responsible for the exceptional bottle-green colour was identified to be vanadium.
